Kosher Food Policy

Social Get-Togethers

Because we wholeheartedly support community gatherings at the synagogue, we ask that food be prepared in the synagogue kitchen, using the kitchen’s utensils, pots, and pans and all Kosher ingredients.

When this is considered impossible and a social event includes non-Kosher food and food that has been prepared in non-Kosher kitchens (such as at a potluck supper), then non-Kosher food may be brought into the social hall, IF the following rules are observed:

  • Non-Kosher food, utensils, or containers may not go in the kitchen.
  • No dishes or utensils from the synagogue kitchen may be used.
  • No containers or utensils brought into the synagogue kitchen may be washed in the synagogue kitchen.
  • No meat of any kind may be brought into the social hall.
  • The food plan is approved by Cantor Strassler.

A Dairy Kosher Kitchen

Congregation Etz Chaim’s kitchen, located on the synagogue’s lower level, off of the Shapiro Social Hall, is a Dairy Kosher kitchen. This means that:

  • Only synagogue kitchen utensils, pots, and pans stored in this kitchen may be used in the kitchen.
  • All cleaning supplies (dishwashing liquid, scouring powders, sprays, and polishing pastes) must be marked with a Kosher food symbol.
  • All cooking utensils, pots, and pans that are added to the kitchen must be new or must not have been used for one year.
  • The only foods that may be brought into the kitchen/put in the refrigerator are:
    • Fresh fruits, fresh vegetables/herbs, fresh fish, and eggs
    • Food labeled with a Kosher Dairy or Pareve symbol
    • Drinks, such as soda, or Kosher grape juice/wine
  • No meat of any kind is permitted in the kitchen or the refrigerator, unless pre-approved by Cantor Strassler.
