7:00pm – Speaker: Rabbi Andy Bachman
Topic: “History, Memory and Civic Responsibility: Memorials and the Ethics of Jewish Life.” Rabbi Bachman will discuss the project of memorializing lost Jewish communities of Belarus and connect the tragic lessons of Jewish history during the Holocaust to the importance of remembrance as both Jews and Americans.
Bio: Andy Bachman is a rabbi and community leader living in Portland, Maine. Beginning in July, he will be rabbi at Temple B’nai Israel in Laconia, New Hampshire. He has served as Senior Rabbi at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn, NY. He has also served as executive director of the of the Jewish Community Project of Lower Manhattan, as Senior Consultant to the Jewish Community Legacy Project, executive director of the Edgar M. Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at New York University and as a faculty member for the Bronfman Fellowships and the Jewish Studies Department at City College of NY.
Andy writes for a Substack called “Water Over Rocks” and has written for a number of publications, including Newsweek, Daily Beast, Washington Post, Forward, NY Jewish Week, LA Jewish Journal and Tablet Magazine. He has served on boards of UJA Federation of New York; Plaza Jewish Community Chapel; New Yorkers Against Gun Violence; and ArkMedia.
